365 Things to do in Portland day 24: Spot a Great Blue Heron at  Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge. Oaks Bottom has 170 acres of trails, meadows and wetlands on the Eastbank of the Willamette River.  This is a favorite hang out for the Great Blue Heron and over 100 species of other birds- including Bald Eagle, woodpeckers and quail,  which also means it’s a favorite hangout for Portland bird watchers.

Oaks Bottoms close-in Eastside location, abundance of animals and beauty of the wetlands  make it a popular place for hikers, joggers and dog walkers from all over Portland.

Have some extra time on your hands?  follow the trail past the wetlands and meadows and eventually you will cross the Springwater Corridor bike trail and Oaks Bottom Amusement Park, but we will save those for another day.
