365 PDX day 27: Visit the ReBuilding Center

365 Things to do in Portland day 27- Visit The Rebuilding Center.

Anytime I’m in the Mississippi neighborhood and have some extra time on my hands, I love popping into the Rebuilding Center and looking around- I  always find something cool.

This local non profit organization takes donations of used building and remodeling materials and sells them to the public for 50-90% off retail price. If you are a home owner, contractor, green builder, or just looking for some wood and random supplies for your next project,  you will appreciate this massive store, which has the regions largest selection of salvaged and reclaimed materials.

Looking for a tax deduction and have old wood, toilets, sinks or other building materials- donate to the Rebuilding Center.

The inventory is constantly changing, so visit frequently.   For some ideas on how to turn that used stuff into useful items, make sure to pop into Refind Furniture,  where they take donations and turn them into art and furniture.

When entering the Rebuilding Center, take a close look at the”Community Trees” . These massive 3 story cob trees were built to showcase the outdoor community gathering area of The Rebuilding Center. Donated and found household items were embedded in the tree branches, and each tree represents a different season.  This is the largest commercial cob project in Portland and was built during The Village Building Convergence.   Don’t worry if you have no idea what I’m talking about now- we’ll save Cob and The VBC for another day.
