365PDX # 49: EarthDay

Posted April 22, 2010

365pDX #49 : Today is the 40th anniversary of EarthDay.

Anybody do anything exciting yet to help the planet (or even your neighborhood) today?

As a kid and teenager, I usually spent EarthDay with a plastic garbage bag in hand (long before they invented compostable garbage bags), hiking the woods near my house picking up trash.  Years later,  several winters and early springs were occupied  helping to organize City Repairs’  EarthDay Celebration here in Portland, which is now in its 10th year.

Of course,  focusing on the environment just one day a year really won’t do much good, unless it reminds us that we need to also make changes  the other 364 days.

It’s nearly 5:00 pm and time to walk my dog- if you are in the Belmont/Sunnyside neighborhood, I’ll be the one walking down the street with a dog leash in one hand, and a garbage bag in the other. It may not be my biggest Earth Day effort, but it’s something.

What are some of your favorite things to do on EarthDay? Please post them below on Facebook
