Things to do in Portland: Farmers Market at People’s Food Co-op – Wednesdays, 2-7pm, Year round
Since their inception in 1970, People’s Food Co-Op has concentrated their integrated efforts on creating unity and promoting a simple, environmentally aware mindset within our local community. Now owned by over 3000 Portland residents, the Co-Op has built itself into an exemplary model of neighborhood collaboration.
One of the main foundations of People’s has always been the support of local farmers and organic growing communities. Each Wednesday they host a five hour farmers market in their courtyard where you can go fulfill all of your produce needs. Because their market is year-round, rather than running through the spring and summer months only, as most local outdoor markets do, they specialize only in what is fresh and seasonal. This month look for spring greens and salad mixes, farm fresh eggs, honey, rhubarb, snap peas, strawberries, sorrel, leeks, green garlic, wild and cultivated mushrooms (including morels, yellow foot, hedeghog and white elm), as well as fresh flowers for your table.
As part of their commitment to serving the whole of the community, People’s also accepts food stamps at their market. You can go inside the store and use your EBT card to purchase wooden tokens in 1 and 5 dollar increments, which you may then use to purchase any items at the market, directly from the farmers.
