365 Things to do in Portland #171: Thursday  Buckman/Sunnyside Farmers Market

I’ve been scoring really big the last few Thursdays at the Farmers Market @20th and SE Salmon. This years growing season was off to a really late start due to all the rain and cold weather, and now at the end of August, we’ve had an incredible run of peaches, blue berries and strawberries. Last week I bought six crates of non spray (not certified, but organically grown) peaches for just $10 a crate from Packers Farms. These are some of the best peaches I’ve had in years. They usually bring several cases of ‘seconds’ peaches, which are perfect for my famous smoothies- just quarter and freeze for future use. They also had blueberries for just $2 a pound- again, some of the best I’ve ever had. I think blueberry season is coming to an end, so be sure to get them quick. Across the market at Denison Farms, I picked up several full crates of incredibly tasty organic strawberries- they were so delicious, I ate a pint before I made it home. Thanks to my wife, they are now safely stored in our freezer  for our winter smoothies.

There are over 30 weekly vendors at the market. Here is a link to some of the other vendors .One of my favorites is Missionary Chocolate, which makes handcrafted vegan chocolate truffles- YUM!. You can also get fresh bread, flowers, seafood,  all natural meats, fresh salmon, pies, and more vegetables than you can even name.

You’ll often see and hear live bands playing there, and the vibe is usually very social and upbeat. The market is open every Thursday through September 30th. 3:00-7pm. I hope to see you there soon.
