365 Things to do in Portland #173: Next Adventure
The first time I stopped in at Next Adventure, they had just opened a tiny shop on SE Grand Street (this was 1997 or 1998), and it was mostly cheap camping gear and used skis for sale. The truth is, they didn’t have much going on, and I remember wondering to myself how they were going to actually sell any of this stuff…
Thirteen years later, and it’s incredible how far they have come since then. The store now takes up half a city block and has three floors full of stuff. For Portland outdoor enthusiasts on a budget, Next Adventure is the ‘go to’ place for gear. They sell new, used and closeout equpment for just about any outdoor adventure. They have camping gear, ski snowboards and skis, tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, climbing gear, and just about everything else. If you play frisbee golf, they have an entire wall of frisbees. They sell so much kayak gear that they opened a kayak store around the corner. They also sell clothing- jackets, ski pants, climbing pants, etc, and sometimes you get get an amazing deal on some of their closeouts.
Head down to the basement and you’ll find its full of used gear for dirt cheap. They have tons of skis and ski wear right now, closeout shoes, all sorts of camping gear and stoves, and a lot of clothing. I’ve found most of the used gear to be a bit scrappy, when you’re on a budget, it’s hard to argue with a $5 thermarest that would sell for $50 new- just be sure to test it out before your Next Adventure.
