Old-PDX or Old Portland style is somewhat of a generic term, which is often used when people are referring to the Foursquare. These homes became extremely popular in Portland (and all over the country, from cities to rural areas). Foursquares were usually built with local materials so siding can brick, stone, stucco, or wood. In Portland you’ll usually see lap style wood siding on these houses.
Fourquare homes are fairly easy to identify, as they are basically a big box with a roof. Traditionally they are 2.5 stories high, have 4 rooms on each floor (hence the name), a porch across the front of the house, overhanging roof. Believe it or not, many of these homes were ordered in kits from Sears. Builders often added new touches to these homes in the form of bay windows, built-ins and beamed ceilings.
