What exactly is a bungalow and why are so many homes called bungalows in Portland?
Although the term bungalow originated in India in the late 1600′s, in Portland today, we commonly use the term bungalow for a detached single-family home built in the early 1900′s. These homes were very affordable to built, so they are prevelant in Portland. Built with just one story, or a second story with a sloping roof (often with dormers). Bungalows are often fairly small homes designed for efficient living, with most of the useable space on the main floor- if they have a second story, the sloping roof keep the square footage upstairs minimal. The center of the bungalows are the living rooms, and they usually have built in cabinets. Low-pitched roof and horizontal shape
There are actually many types of bungalow styles that sprouted up in different parts of the country, including the California Bungalow, Chicago Bungalow, Craftsman Bungalow (popular in Portland), Spanish Colonial and Dutch Colonial Bungalow.
