St. Johns neighborhood is at the North Western edge of North Portland, which makes is somewhat isolated. Many residents like the ‘small town’ feeling of St Johns and that is is off the beaten path for the greater Portland area. When I bought my first house back in 1996, people were saying that St. Johns was going to be the next ‘up and coming neighborhood’ and real estate in St. Johns was going to go up dramatically in value. Fifteen years later, the neighborhood is still being called up and coming, and is still a very affordable option for buying a home in Portland. St. John’s has a lot going for it- the main strip of St. Johns has a nice variety of small shops and restaurants, you have great views of Forest Park, and of course the beautiful and unique St. Johns bridge. The St. John’s zipcode is 97203.
Traditionally St. John’s has been a ‘blue collar’ neighborhood. In recent years, it has become a hotspot for younger first time home buyers, who are attracted to the affordable prices of homes for sale in St. Johns., and the area is slowly becoming hipper (there are now even two Starbucks in the neighborhood).
For hiking adventures, residents can enjoy The Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area, which has over 100 acres of nature trails, wildlife, river access and parks/picnic areas.
If you want to live in Portland, but are looking for a quieter area a little off the beaten path, you may want to consider buying a house in St. Johns.
