There are many locally owned coffee shops, markets, and distinctive shops and restaurants. If the commercial strip on Belmont street isn’t enough, Hawthorne Street is just six blocks South. For some relaxation, head just a few blocks North of Belmont street to Laurelhurst Park, in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, one of the most beautiful parks in Portland. Dog owners make daily pilgrimages here for the off leash area. Whether you’re out for the day or night, you can grab a cup of joe at Stumptown, an organic burrito at Laughing Planet and follow it up with a little jazz at the Blue Monk.
Another reason the area is popular with parents is Sunnyside Environmental Middle School. An alternative magnet school that is getting lots of positive attention and results.

A beautiful community gathering space in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Portland, just one block South of Belmont and a few blocks North of Hawthorne Street. Work on this Piazza was started during one of the Village Building Convergences, and has continued yearly. Each May residents repaint the street.
