The Hawthorne District is in the Sunnyside neighborhood, of inner Southeast Portland, but is commonly just referred to as Hawthorne neighborhood or Hawthorne District. It is one of the most well known and unique neighborhoods in Portland. You will find many beautiful older homes in the area, along with small plexes and investment property. Residents of the Hawthorne area love to paint their beautiful Hawthorne Homes bright and funky colors. The Center of the Hawthorne area is Hawthorne Street, which is a favorite shopping area of Portlanders. The Hawthorne area ( Hawthorne district) is bordered by the Belmont neighborhood (also in the Sunnyside), Mt. Tabor neighborhood, and the Division-Clinton neighborhood (Richmnd and Hosford-Abernathy Neighborhood). The “center” of the Hawthorne commercial area is between 34th-39th and Hawthorne, there you will find The Baghdad Theater, Powell Books (not the big one on Burnside), The Red Light (great place to buy vintage or used clothes) and dozens of other stores. Recently New Seasons built a store on 40th and Hawthorne, which will help ‘upper Hawthorne’ attract a lot more foot traffic as well.
